Sunday afternoon Damaris got very upset and refused to eat or sleep. She didn’t sleep all night and I called her doctor Monday morning because I just knew something was wrong. They had me bring her in immediately. The doctor saw her and then sent us to the local children’s hospital for tests. Damaris had lost almost a full pound in just 5 days. She also had a very yellow appearance and so we were concerned about jaundice. They began running tests (including taking blood several times, doing a spinal tap, chest x-rays, an echocardiogram, etc.). It turned out after the tests at the hospital that she did have jaundice. Her bilirubin (sp?) levels were 21 (should be below 12). She was dehydrated. She had low blood sugar. She wasn’t maintaining a proper body temperature. They were also concerned about an infection. They admitted her to the hospital. She was given an IV to rehydrate her. They also began running antibiotics through the IV in case she did have an infection. She was put on a bili bed to try to bring down her bilirubin levels. She was put in an incubator to help with her body temperature. Her doctor told us we would be in the hospital at least 3 days and a possiblity of 10 days if she had an infection. We are now home. She did not have an infection, but all the other things were of great concern the doctor also. Her bilirubin levels were down to 10.1 yesterday morning. She is rehydrated and has gained enough weight to now be 1 ounce above her birth weight. The echocardiogram did show a small hole in her heart that is causing a heart murmur, but the doctor said it was not anything that would have to be fixed and that she should be fine. Her body temperature seems to be good and her blood sugar is back to normal. The bad news of everything is that Damaris refused to nurse. I tried to pump for her, but was unable to get enough milk to feed her (less than 1/8 of an ounce everytime I pumped). We have had to go to giving her formula now. It is very disappointing to me, but I know I have to do what is best for Damaris. Damaris’ B-Ma (my mom) came down Tuesday night and will be staying until Saturday with us. It has been such a rough last week.
